Taking Learning Seriously
I agree with the article "Taking Learning Seriously" by Lee S. Shulman. The title alone says it all. Both teachers and students need to take learning seriously. Even though I'm not currently teaching I have seen and experienced students go through all of the pathologies: amnesia, fantasia, and inertia.
One of the biggest things I've noticed is we as teachers assume we think we know what the students know but that isn't always the case. If we take a step back and take the time to really understand and know are students and what they know we can improve and help these pathologies. It will mean more to them and help us better as teachers.
Another part of the article that also stood out was the concept of getting knowledge that is inside, out. This concept goes along with knowing the students. But instead of assuming what they know we need to know what they know. By knowing what the students know can also help fight the pathologies.
Taking learning seriously is important and educational technology can help when student encounter these pathologies. Incorporating and designing tools using technology are good tools to use with students to refresh prior knowledge and teach new ways. Technology is a great tool and motivator for active learning.
